He and his family had returned to his mother's village in Krisek, Pattani, southern Thailand, for Hari Raya, but the joy of celebration almost turned fatal for the Year Six pupil when he developed Steven Johnson's Syndrome, an allergic reaction to drugs and micro-organisms. His mother, Khatijah Mahyes, 42, said he had been drinking a lot of soft drinks and a bottle of an energy drink on the first day of Hari Raya.
"He fell sick the next day and we gave him some medicine.
"We were shocked to see his eyes swollen and rashes appearing on his mouth the next morning. "Our family then rushed back home here.
"His condition worsened. His whole body was covered with rashes and blisters," she said at her house in Kampung Limbongan here. Khatijah said her son was first admitted to Tengku Anis Hospital here before being transferred to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital in Kota Baru. "Doctors are still uncertain what triggered the reaction, but confirmed that it was an allergy."
Khatijah said Shahrul was hospitalised for 22 days from Sept 13, and missed his Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) examination. She said a district education officer who visited Shahrul in hospital told her that he would be allowed to take his UPSR in December to enable him to go to secondary school. Shahrul, who is recovering at home, said he had sworn not to touch energy drinks in the future. "I am afraid to drink it now. It has been a nightmare for me," said Shahrul.
