Surprised? Don’t be because there is a fitness machine called Power Plate to prove this.
Available at BodyTone Wellness Studio in Bangsar Village 2, Kuala Lumpur, Power Plate uses the principle of acceleration training. BodyTone is the sole authorised centre for Power Plate in the country.
In the 1960s, Russian astronauts used this principle to stimulate the body’s natural response to vibration, which will transmit energy to create involuntary reflex muscle contractions of 30 to 50 times per second. It helped them to overcome zero gravity and to promote speedy recovery upon their return from outer space.
In 1999, a Dutch trainer brought the machine to a fitness centre in the United Kingdom where it created a buzz. Since then Power Plate has been used by celebrities such as supermodel Claudia Schiffer, singer Kylie Minogue and tennis player Rafael Nadal. Local celebrities who have used the machine are Stephanie Chai, Deborah Henry and Belinda Chee. Even comedian Joanne Kam is undergoing full body workout using Power Plate. Power Plate generates 30-50 hertz of vibrations, and has the standard gravitational level of up to 5G. The mechanism of Power Plate is that you have to hold a pose or do some movements dynamically for up to one minute at a time on it. “Our in-house trainers to help you with the type of exercise you can do on the Power Plate. We help you create a custom-made workout, which suits your body condition. You can use dumb bells and kick box when using the machine. You can do sit-ups and push-ups too,” says BodyTone operations manager Ooi Ann Ann.
There are over 100 exercise positions that can be paired with the machine.
“If you are exercising on the Power Plate, you will be burning twice as much fat because of muscle manipulation. It will improve blood circulation too,” she says. Ooi used to lead an unhealthy lifestyle and put on a lot of weight. She went to gyms and did conventional workouts but they didn’t help her much. Then she discovered Power Plate in 2002.
“I tried the machine when I was in Dubai. I noticed some changes after the first day,” says Ooi who adds that the machine costs RM60,000. “But to see the full result, you have to wait till after the third session,” she says.
“The vibration breaks up fat cells, making the fat burning process faster and easier.
“Power Plate can accelerate fat reductionand in sessions as short as 45 minutes, three times a week, it can help to enhance overall body and muscle performance and increase muscle strength. “It is suitable for those with joint problems because it can strengthen the muscles at the joints,” says Ooi.
Apart from that, it has been proven scientifically to fight cellulite and increase bone density. It is low impact training suitable for a wide range of age groups. Power Plate is ideal for the older person who can’t deal with long hours of exercising but still wants to keep fit. Mothers who have just given birth and want to shed their extra kilos, can also use the Power Plate. “You are working at the machine’s pace, not yours. Therefore, your muscles will be working at an ideal rate,” says Ooi.
Prices for a session of Power Plate fitness programme range from RM135 to RM175. To complement the Power Plate programme, there is a toning and body slimming system at BodyTone called Power 517 technique. It uses the NARL 17 machine and is the world’s first scientifically proven lypolisis (the process to breaking up fat cells) technique. Power 517 uses the combination of ultrasound frequencies and intensities to act at localised specific areas such as the face, thighs, abdomen and arms. A session of Power 517 treatment costs RM110.
